I paid a visit to the library and stocked up on some books. My to-be-read (TBR) list is growing extremely long. I might need to cut some books out. I also have Kindle Unlimited for another month and I would like to get through some of those books as well. Here are the books I picked up yesterday.
Junipero Serra: California’s Founding Father
By Steven W. Hackel
I am currently reading the book Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West by Hampton Sides. The book covers the Mexican-American war, of which battles are fought in California. In the Blood and Thunder, it mentions the missions and the churches. I am a native Californian as well as Catholic, so I thought it would be fun to learn more about the Catholic man who founded all of the missions and civilized California.
The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century
by Steven Pinker
Steven Pinker is a legend. When I saw that he wrote a book on writing style, I had to pick it up. As an author, it seemed to me like a must-read. I haven’t heard of it before, so I do not know how it is reviewed, but I am willing to give it a shot. Even if I just flip through this one.
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
by Yuval Noah Harari
This one seems to be a highly regarded work of literature and history. The day I picked this up, it was being tweeted about as someone’s favorite book. I cannot remember who recommended this book to me, but I made sure to request it from the library, which is why I was there in the first place. I am looking forward to delving into this one.
Stein on Writing: A Master Editor of Some of the Most Successful Writers of Our Century Shares His Craft Techniques and Strategies
by Sol Stein
As always I am a sucker for trade books that promise to help me be better at my craft. Writing is my lifeblood. My confirmation saint is the patron saint of writers, St. Francis de Sales. I will probably read every book on the craft that I can get my hands on.
Star Wars: Heir to the Empire
by Timothy Zahn
Finally, a fun book to read. I picked up this book before and read the first few chapters, but unfortunately, it had to go back to the library. I was able to grab it off the shelf and I plan to finish this one up. The story is amazing as would be expected from this masterful franchise.
